TV tonight: Joseph Fiennes is uncanny as Gareth Southgate
James Graham’s smash hit play Dear England comes to the small screen. Plus, a tense drama about a love triangle that ended in murder. Here’s what to watch this evening
Dear England
Sunday, 9pm, BBC One
Casting Joseph Fiennes as Gareth Southgate in James Graham’s award-winning play was a masterstroke, and he’s reprising the role on screen. It follows Gareth in post-Brexit Britain, as he is called upon to take the England squad into a new era and restore hope. “We are probably not going to win the World Cup,” he tells the team, who are baffled by his approach. “The good news is, nobody expects us to.” When he brings sports psychologist Pippa Grange (Jodie Whittaker) on board, conversations around men’s mental health start to open – and penalties start being scored. Based on real interviews, the result is a thoughtful, all-encompassing take on the real people in the beautiful game. Hollie Richardson
