A man allegedly armed with a machete has been shot dead by police at a western Sydney shopping centre on Saturday afternoon.
Police were called to a car park at Westfield Mt Druitt at around 3.15pm on Saturday after reports of a brawl involving two groups of people.
New South Wales police said uniformed officers were threatened by a male who was allegedly armed with a machete. Police then fired a number of shots at the man.
The man, believed to be in his 20s, received first aid from officers and subsequent treatment by paramedics, but died at the scene.
NSW police declared a critical incident just after 4pm.
Footage posted to social media appeared to show police and shoppers outside the Westfield after the incident, with one claiming to have seen the man “running through the shops” with a machete.
Police said the state crime command’s homicide squad would investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, with the investigation to be reviewed by the professional standards command.
