England’s Jordan Henderson is out of the World Cup after breaking his wrist

A historic night for England as they beat Mexico 3-2 in their World Cup last-16 tie was soured by an injury sustained by Jordan Henderson after falling over an advertising board in the post-match celebrations.

The former Liverpool captain, who was an unused substitute, was taken to hospital and it was confirmed later that he had broken his wrist and that he is out of the tournament.

Shortly after the full-time whistle, as England’s players went to celebrate in front of their fans, medical staff were seen rushing to the vicinity. Henderson was given oxygen and carried off on a stretcher.

Jude Bellingham told the BBC: “He’s in a bit of bother but our medical team have got everything under control probably. Best not to give too much detail when I don’t know too much what is going on. Everyone was there to support him and even that was a beautiful thing to see.”

Thomas Tuchel, the England head coach, said later: “Jordan injured his wrist, it just doesn’t fit to the evening that Jordan is not with us. I don’t know the procedure, the doctor told me he is in the hospital.”

Henderson had been booked during a fractious game over a confrontation on the sidelines. His sole appearance in the tournament came as an 84th-minute substitute against Panama.

England defeated Mexico with two goals from Bellingham and a penalty from Harry Kane, hanging on to win after Jarell Quansah had been sent off for catching Jesús Gallardoan with his studs early in the second half.
