New weekly newsletter will bring readers the most compelling news, politics and culture from across India

The Guardian has today (Tuesday 4 August) launched This is India, a new free weekly newsletter centred on life in the subcontinent and which puts the spotlight on the stories, ideas and news makers of modern India.

Authored by Niha Masih, former India correspondent for the Washington Post, the newsletter has been developed in response to a growing appetite from audiences for more stories from across India. According to recent research from Comscore, in the last quarter the Guardian reached more than 4 million unique visitors in India - the third largest global digital news source in the country by reach.

Masih, who is based in India, will draw on her deep expertise to provide readers with vital, independent reporting from the region. In 2022 she was a joint recipient of the South Asian Journalism Association’s Daniel Pearl Award for her reporting on surveillance of Indian political activists and has also reported for New Delhi Television (NDTV) and the Hindustan Times.

The Guardian has a strong reputation for covering stories and issues of national importance across the country, including our recent reporting on the Cockroach Janta Party movement, which brought the story to audiences both in India and internationally. The newsletter particularly aims to offer great journalism to a younger Indian readership.

This is India will be published on a weekly basis, landing in subscribers’ inboxes every Tuesday.

Niha Masih, author of This is India, said:

“India’s political, social and economic trajectory is of growing local and global consequence, and This is India will explore it in all its complexity.

“This weekly newsletter will feature in-depth storytelling, news analysis, ideas and reflections, interviews with news makers along with a dose of the unexpected and fun. This is India aims to become a platform for thoughtful journalism and important conversations that endure beyond the news grind.”

Toby Moses, the Guardian’s head of newsletters, said:

“I’m really excited to be launching This is India, the Guardian’s first foray into a newsletter for our Indian readership. We’ve seen a huge appetite on social media for our brilliant reporting on the Cockroach protests and we want to provide this younger, aspirational, outward-looking Indian readership with more great journalism through this newsletter, authored by the brilliant Niha Masih.

“It’s the first time we’ve done something like this - and I’m interested to see if we can build direct relationships with our Indian readers through our own platform.”
