We may now share more about our lives than ever before on social media, but when it comes to chatting about what’s in our bank accounts, things suddenly get a little quieter.

According to Barclays research from earlier this year, 50% of us believe money to be a taboo topic. We can see signs of this whenever somebody brings up the subject at a party or around the family dinner table: eyes dart elsewhere, conversation dries up and somebody suddenly remembers they need the loo.

Talking about money doesn’t have to be awkward. Being more open about what we can (or can’t) afford or our financial goals may help us to plan better, encourage healthier budgeting habits and make us more confident about our spending decisions.
