Snoop Dogg shocks British curling pair with request for photo at Winter Olympics
British curling pair Bruce Mouat and Jennifer Dodds got a picture request from the rapper Snoop Dogg at the Winter Olympics
Snoop Dogg and the sport of curling made for a very odd mixture at the Winter Olympics on Friday with British competitors Bruce Mouat and Jennifer Dodds even more shocked than the crowd and the millions tuning in when they got a picture request from the rapper.
Mouat and Dodds had maintained their unbeaten record so far at the Games with a 7-4 win over tough opponents Sweden, but were just as pleased to meet the US superstar.
“We saw him at half-time. We saw he was sat next to [US curler] Cory [Thiesse]’s mum. He asked for a photo with us, so I am feeling pretty good about myself,” reported Mouat. The duo were asked what the musician said to them, with Dodds replying: “He heard about Bruce!”
The rapper, who was wearing a USA jacket that featured photos of Thiesse and partner Korey Dropkin, is an honorary coach for the US team as well as a special correspondent for NBC, and took to the ice himself to have a try at sweeping a stone. He had also carried the Olympic flame on Wednesday, having previously been a torchbearer at the Summer Games in Paris two years ago.
The American pair beat Canada’s Brett Gallant and Jocelyn Peterman 7-5 in front of a raucous stadium packed with US supporters. “It’s the Olympics, and our family and friends are here cheering us on. Snoop Dogg’s here cheering us on! [The jacket] was so cool. Loved it. Coach Snoop looked good today,” a fired-up Dropkin said.
“I’m just here to cheer, uplift and maybe drop a little wisdom from the sidelines, Team USA athletes are the real stars,” Snoop said. “This team represents the best of what sport can be: talent, heart and hustle. If I can bring a little more love and motivation to that, that’s a win for me.”
Mouat and Dodds were in action again on Friday afternoon, comfortably beating Korea 8-2 in the fifth match of the round-robin phase in Cortina.
Earlier, the ice-skating pairing of Lewis Gibson and Lilah Fear made an excellent start in their quest for the first British medal in their Winter Olympics discipline since Torvill and Dean won bronze in the 1994 Games in Lillehammer.
Gibson and Fear are in bronze position after the first round of the ice dance session of the figure skating team event. The pair, in a nod to the 1990s, performed to a Spice Girls medley.
“I just feel so proud,” Fear said. “The week that we’ve had, building up to this point when we can just let all of our work just show up for us and enjoy it. I feel like we did exactly that and there’s nothing like this feeling.” Gibson added: “It’s our first ever time doing the team event. It’s incredible – their support is so close at the side of the boards.”
