TV tonight: another pandemic strikes in a special Casualty series
The Holby team prepare for a hellish time as a mysterious illness breaks out. Plus: Nicola Coughlan hosts Saturday Night Live UK! Here’s what to watch this evening
Casualty
8.50pm, BBC One
“We might be about to re-enter hell.” Holby continues to ramp up the drama with another 12-part series – entitled Lethal Legacy – which this time follows a mysterious illness that might start another potential pandemic. If that doesn’t sound too traumatic, the team have personal demons to face, too. Hollie Richardson
Secret Africa: Into the Wild
7pm, Channel 4
Explorer Lucy Shepherd continues her survivalist trek through some of the remotest parts of Tanzania. She and local guides must reach a resupply point before tackling the Serengeti. Obstacles include curious elephants, killer bees and some unfortunate digestive issues. Graeme Virtue
Black British Music at the BBC: Volume 2
8.50pm, BBC Two
As V&A East in London opens an exhibition of 125 years of Black British music-making, DJ Spoony personally curates a playlist of his 40 favourite tracks, encompassing soul, ska, reggae, rap and garage. All the way, in fact, from Shirley Bassey to FKA twigs, by way of the Selecter, Soul II Soul and Seal. Ali Catterall
The Palace and the Presidents
8.50pm, Channel 5
When Donald Trump visited Windsor Castle last year, he received a Red Arrows fly-past and a glittering state banquet. But what will happen when Charles III returns the visit? “The King is very good at small talk,” says Kay Burley, in this look at the history of transatlantic meet and greets. AC
The Neighbourhood
9pm, ITV1
In this dispatch from the curtain-twitching popularity contest, the first family are voted out and there’s a snub over instant coffee. There’s also some sweet Montague and Capulet-style chemistry between the teenagers of two warring families. It’s good fun underpinned nicely by Graham Norton’s wry voiceover. Phil Harrison
Saturday Night Live UK
10pm, Sky One
Another visit to the expectation-defying variety show which has maintained a good comedy hit-rate so far in its run, despite the nation’s scepticism. This week’s guest host is former Derry Girls and Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan, who is touting a new series of comic drama Big Mood (which explains why she was in the audience for the opening episode!). Tunes for sensitive frat boys come courtesy of a performance from Foo Fighters. PH
Film choice
Apex, out now, Netflix
It’s not the greatest climbing film of all time (that would be Cliffhanger, obviously), but Baltasar Kormákur’s thriller does provide a wealth of sweaty-palmed vertical tension. Five months after an expedition in Norway with her partner goes fatally wrong, Charlize Theron’s Sasha finds herself in the Australian outback. But her solo white-water kayaking adventure becomes much more perilous when a local man (a gleefully unhinged Taron Egerton) shows an interest in her. Theron is perfect for the role – physical but not superhuman, with the smarts to avoid being just a victim. Simon Wardell
Eddington, 8.45am, 10.25pm, Sky Cinema Premiere
It’s 2020, and Pedro Pascal’s mayor Ted has imposed a lockdown due to the virus but is also up for re-election. Joaquin Phoenix plays the sheriff, Joe, who decides to stand against Ted over freedom of choice. After the shaggy dog tale that was Beau Is Afraid, writer-director Ari Aster tightens things up with a modern western satire that encompasses Covid and conspiracy theories, Black Lives Matter, small-town politics and social media. An increasingly manic comedy in which bad choices lead to worse outcomes. SW
Living, 9pm, Channel 4
As a British adaptation of the 1952 Akira Kurosawa classic Ikiru, Oliver Hermanus’s drama has its work cut out to emulate the original. That it succeeds is largely down to Bill Nighy’s finely graded performance. His 1950s civil servant, Mr Williams, finds a glimmer of redemption and joy in an empty, staid life when he is diagnosed with terminal cancer. As he abandons his nine-to-five to deal with the news, Williams is brought out of his moroseness by a young colleague (Aimee Lou Wood) and a writer (Tom Burke). A touching tale about the ways we give meaning to our existence. SW
Gold Run, 11pm, BBC Four
War can bring out the best in people, and this stirring fact-based drama is about an ordinary man who did an extraordinary thing. In 1940, Germany is about to invade Norway so its government must spirit its gold reserves out of the country asap. The call goes out to mild-mannered Labour party functionary Fredrik Haslund (Jon Øigarden) to organise the transport, aided by a few soldiers, a bank clerk, a famous poet and his own sister. Amid dramatic scenery, it’s a picture-postcard thriller. SW
