The first world war drama has been a thrill throughout. Plus, the uneasy story of the Berlin Olympics in 1936. Here’s everything to watch this evening

The Sentinels

9.50pm, BBC Four

This French counterfactual thriller about lab-grown super-soldiers in the first world war has sustained itself convincingly; as the final two episodes drop, the political intrigue and action sequences dovetail perfectly. The mission to free Mazauric is in jeopardy – which is worrying as it’s clear that everything depends upon it. Phil Harrison

Sussex: Jewel of the South Coast

7pm, Channel 5

Exactly why this show opts for a title that risks alienating viewers from every other county on the south coast is hard to fathom. This instalment of the continuing profile takes in a lifeguard, a Chichester cleric working to preserve her cathedral, and farmers making artisan cheese. Alexi Duggins

Boléro at the Proms

7.55pm, BBC Two

Recorded on the day of the World Cup final, the Spanish National Orchestra made its Proms debut with Ravel’s Boléro. Under chief conductor David Afkham – his neck wrapped in a Spain football scarf – they also performed Rodrigo’s Concierto de Aranjuez and Manuel de Falla’s The Three-Cornered Hat. Nick Mohammed presents. Hollie Richardson

Hitler’s Games: Berlin 1936 in Colour

8pm, Channel 4

“One hundred thousand spectators rose at once doing the Hitler salute and shouting ‘Heil Hitler’.” Historians help to tell the story of the Berlin Olympics in 1936, along with the offspring of competitors such as Jesse Owens, Audrey Brown and Jack Beresford. They share their family members’ conflicted experiences of wanting to represent their countries at an event that was Nazi propaganda. HR

The Staircase

10.55pm, ITV1

For all of its plotting contrivances, this drama about Michael (Colin Firth) and his attempts to prove that he didn’t murder his wife Kathleen (Toni Collette) is tense and gripping. The DA’s office builds the case against Michael – handily for the prosecutors, details about his past emerge that could do their job for them. PH

Ghosts Australia

10.55pm, BBC Three

A double bill of laughs with the ghoulie squad down under. Kate may be getting used to her spooky housemates – including Lindy the 80s aerobics instructor and Satan the 90s biker – but will they behave when her mum, Mel, unexpectedly comes to stay? Worse still, Mel is threatening to move in. HR

Film choice

Heretic, 9.35pm, Sky Cinema Premiere

Sophie Thatcher (Yellowjackets) and Chloe East (The Fabelmans) play a pair of unworldly Mormon missionaries who arrive at the door of an avuncular Englishman hoping to make a new convert. That Englishman, however, is played by Hugh Grant – once a foppish romcom idol, now deep into his villain era – and what at first seems like a playful willingness to debate religion turns into something much more terrifying. With a script by A Quiet Place co-writers Scott Beck and Bryan Woods to work with (the two also co-direct), Grant commands the screen with glee. It’s a career-best performance, with enough dark miracles to fully restore your faith in A24’s waning horror output. Ellen E Jones

Love Me, 10.25am, Sky Cinema Premiere

Millennia have passed since humanity’s extinction, and on Earth’s half-frozen ocean a smart-tech-enabled buoy (Kristen Stewart) floats alone, emitting a “waiting to connect” signal. One day this is answered by a passing satellite (Steven Yeun), and together the devices search the internet, hoping to derive an understanding of life and love from this oddly incomplete record. First-time film-makers Sam and Andy Zuchero combine animation and live action into awe-inspiring visuals – and it’s funny too! EEJ
