TV tonight: a remarkable Bafta-winning film gets a vital update

The story of Mir Hussein in Afghanistan, who cameras have now followed for 25 years. Plus: a comedy from the director of Colin from Accounts. Here’s what to watch this evening

25 Years in Afghanistan

Sunday, 11.15pm, ITV1

Mir Hussein was eight years old when he first saw a camera in 2002. Documentary-makers Phil Grabsky and Shoaib Sharifi filmed him and his family in Afghanistan when US troops arrived, and followed him for two decades as he grew up and became a cameraman himself in Kabul. The Bafta-winning film My Childhood, My Country: 20 Years in Afghanistan was released in 2021. This is an updated version that revisits those years and adds new insight into what has happened in the half-decade since, after the US and its allies left and the Taliban regained control. It’s a remarkable feat, showing everyday life – including joyous moments such as filming a football match – in the context of the regime. Hollie Richardson

Stunningly shot by a director who presents the creatures as if they’re Marvel superheroes, this must-watch nature series continues. Episode four looks at how animals who live in colder climates are adapting to the climate crisis, including a snow leopard in the Himalayas who is edged out of his homestead by a rival male. Richard E Grant’s Very Modern Odyssey

8pm, Channel 4

Grant’s jaunt around Odysseus haunts reaches the Tunisian island of Djerba, where he soaks up the energy of Arabic markets and the ancient know-how of Jewish craftsmanship. In Homeric terms this is lotus-eating country, but there’s no danger of our guide sinking into an amnesiac stupor: he’s soon off to the west coast of Italy in search of history’s worst dinner party host, Circe. Debuts at the Proms

A celebration of Proms history with its premieres and debuts. There’s the Spanish National Orchestra, who debuted this year on the same night Spain won the World Cup, plus superstar soprano Angel Blue, and the first accordion soloist. HR

Sunny Nights

10.15pm, ITV1

Directed by Colin from Accounts’ Trent O’Donnell, this crime comedy drama follows two American chancers who land in Australia and get into all types of trouble. Siblings Martin (Will Forte) and Vicki (D’Arcy Carden) are trying to set up a spray tan business when Martin has a one-night stand that ends up in blackmail. HR
