TV tonight: The Voice gets a shake-up with new judge Kelly Rowland
The Destiny’s Child star joins the hit singing contest. Plus: the essential BBC Four drama about America’s exit from Kabul. Here’s what to watch this evening
The Voice UK
7pm, ITV1
A new series calls for a new judge! Kelly Rowland will take a seat in the swivelling chairs for this year’s talent show, alongside Tom Jones, will.i.am, Tom Fletcher and Danny Jones. Emma Willis is back on hosting duties, though this could well be her last time. And there’s another fancy new feature: a “rewind” button that gives the judges an opportunity to bring back a contestant they regret letting go. Hollie Richardson
Deal Or No Deal: Celebrity Special
6pm, ITV1
Comedian and actor Katherine Ryan has faced the infamous Banker before, but she’s back again for more drama. With no shortage of celebrity friends and a history of taking home the cash for charity, she’s as ready as anyone to open those 22 red boxes in the right order as Stephen Mulhern tries to keep up. Hannah Verdier
Alan Carr’s Picture Slam
6.30pm, BBC One
Eyes front for Carr’s breezy “say what you see” quiz in which competing duos must correctly identify images against the clock. If the aim is to get the entire family shouting at the telly, the show’s arbitrary pick’n’mix – from classic Hollywood to smartphone app icons – is its secret weapon. Graeme Virtue
Marvin Gaye: A Tribute at the Proms
8pm, BBC Two
Edwin Outwater conducts, and guest singers including Luke James are on tonsil duty for the BBC Concert Orchestra’s celebration of the soul icon. Andi Oliver hosts proceedings, with new arrangements of I Heard It Through the Grapevine, Sexual Healing and Ain’t No Mountain High Enough. Ali Catterall
Kabul
9pm, BBC Four
This essential drama about the fallout from the American decision to abandon Kabul in 2021 continues. As panic spreads, Gilles attempts to negotiate with the Taliban – but with no trust on either side, it seems risky. Meanwhile, Amina decides to flee, but can she keep Nooria safe in the meantime? PH
Nigel Farage: Where Does the Money Come From?
9.30pm, Channel 5
Reform’s taste for litigation arguably makes idle speculation about this question unwise. But Channel 5 are up for it anyway in this documentary which puts Farage’s finances under the microscope, exploring his donors and examining his various lucrative sidelines as a broadcaster and speaker. PH
Film choice
We Dive at Dawn, 1.25pm, BBC Two
Despite dutifully fulfilling its propaganda brief, this 1943 film from Anthony Asquith works superbly in its own right as a tense wartime thriller. John Mills, that era’s go-to everyman, stars as the captain of the fictional submarine Sea Tiger. Sent on a mission to attack a new German battleship, he and his crew find themselves out on their own in the Baltic, facing mines, undersea nets and destroyers. Naturally, a can-do attitude prevails, but the tangled personal lives of the crew provide a comic distraction to the life-and-death stuff of winning the war. Simon Wardell
Doctor Strange, 8pm, Channel 4
This is the movie that, for better or worse, introduced the multiverse to Marvel’s superhero franchise. It also chucked magic into the otherwise muscle-based mix – as practised by Benedict Cumberbatch’s arrogant brain surgeon turned wielder of the mystic arts. This gives the film an enjoyably psychedelic feel, as Strange battles rogue sorcerer Kaecilius (Mads Mikkelsen), and is oddly reminiscent of Christopher Nolan’s Inception and Tenet (it was released between the two) in its architecture-twisting, time-reversing spectacle.
