TV tonight: laughter and horror in a dark new Aussie crime comedy

Fans of Guilt will enjoy this thriller about two siblings who accidentally kill a man. Plus: more claustrophobic action in Vigil. Here’s what to watch this evening

The cover-up is always riskier than the crime. This darkly comic Australian thriller is loosely based on the excellent BBC drama Guilt and involves a pair of bickering siblings who accidentally run over and kill a man. Cue a slow-motion meltdown as the perps flee the scene, the police sit on their hands and the victim’s niece decides to investigate. A convincing balance of laughter and horror. Phil Harrison

American Classics at the Proms

US conductor Marin Alsop marshals a rousing selection of 20th-century favourites, with numbers from West Side Story and On the Town bringing urban clatter, while excerpts from Aaron Copland’s ballet Appalachian Spring and Jerome Moross’s soundtrack to The Big Country take us into America’s wide open spaces. More claustrophobic thriller action in the Arctic Circle. Rose Leslie’s Kirsten has annoyed the Russians but, fortunately, the cavalry is on the way in the shape of her formidable other half, Amy (Suranne Jones). But the more Amy digs, the murkier the circumstances around Hodge’s murder seem. Are they looking in the right place? PH

A precision-tooled terror campaign by enemies unknown has turned London into a literal boom town. Stressed bomb disposal officer Wash (Vicky McClure) is about ready to blow her top. 24 Hours in Police Custody: The Ambush

The disturbing case, which began last week, concludes as police continue to investigate the circumstances that left a 17-year-old boy with potentially fatal head injuries. As the young man fights for his life, the officers follow a trail of evidence that leads them to a territorial dispute between two drug gangs. Bleak. PH

The Terror: Devil in Silver

The unsettling horror anthology wraps up its third season with a double bill. In a shabby psychiatric hospital, Iron Maiden-loving inmate Pepper (Dan Stevens) is girding himself to take down an insidious demon. Steel Magnolias, 6.40pm, Film4

A double-bill tribute to the late Dolly Parton includes Seriously Red, a romcom about a Dolly impersonator, but the real McCoy is here in Herbert Ross’s 1989 weepie. The drama revolves round a Louisiana beauty parlour run by Parton’s plain-talking Truvy, where a group of close female friends gather to gossip, mark major life changes and set the world to rights. The prime movers are Julia Roberts as bride-to-be Shelby and Sally Field as her mother M’Lynn, but Shirley MacLaine sweeps all before her as the gloriously sour Ouiser (try saying it out loud).
